Glass Mask is one of the most popular Shoujo manga/animes ever. It's about a young actress named Maya Kitajama and her desires to play a coveted role called "The Crimson Goddess." The manga has been in print off and on since 1976, and is one of the longest-running and most successful shoujo mangas ever. Of course, her world is also filled with bishi actors who also vie for her heart.

Note: in researching this, the only non-head shots I could find of these characters came from a porno site. Take their bodies with a grain of salt, especially since shoujo girls usually have thin, flat bodies and end up looking like guys.

Going old school for the old fools!  I never watched or read Glass Mask, but I have seen and read one of its progeny, Sakura Wars.  A lot of the same tensions re. acting, plus mecha and wonderful songs.  One of the Sakura Wars OVAs even has an action detective production called "Crimson Lizard."  I reblogged the naughty version on Tumblr, and I like this tame version with the proper kimonos.
